Neck Pain Q & A

What is neck pain?

Your neck, also known as your cervical spine, is the region that begins directly underneath your skull and stops at the top of your shoulders. Your cervical spine has seven bones called vertebrae that protect your spine. It also has muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves.

While your neck is one of the most flexible and strong parts of your spine, it’s also vulnerable to injury, stiffness, and inflammation. In some cases, neck pain can be so intense it’s debilitating.

What causes neck pain?

When you experience acute neck pain, it’s often due to tension or muscle strain. In many cases, you have this type of discomfort because you’re straining to carry heavy objects, practicing poor posture, sleeping in odd positions, or spending extended periods sitting at your desk. It’s also common to experience neck pain if you experience a sudden and traumatic movement of your head, like whiplash from a car accident.

If you have chronic neck pain, it’s often because of:

  • Herniated discs
  • Radiculopathy, or pinched or damaged nerves
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Congenital abnormalities

Less frequently, neck pain arises from tumors or spinal cancers. It can also indicate a health condition requiring immediate attention, like a heart attack or meningitis.

How is neck pain diagnosed and treated?

Dr. Amirdelfan conducts a comprehensive physical exam during your consultation that includes a review of your symptoms and discussing both your personal and medical history. Based on this examination, Dr. Amirdelfan might recommend additional tests, like digital imaging, electromyography (EMG), or nerve conduction studies.

As a world-renowned pain management expert, Dr. Amirdelfan offers cutting-edge and minimally invasive techniques to address the cause of your pain. Common interventional pain management therapies for neck pain include:

  • Nerve blocks
  • Epidural injections
  • Intrathecal infusion
  • Regenerative medicine
  • Interspinous spacers
  • Sacroiliac (SI) joint fusion

Dr. Amirdelfan also offers spinal cord stimulation for chronic neck pain. A spinal cord stimulator, or SCS, is an implantable device used to treat pain. This interventional pain technique uses low levels of electrical stimulation to disrupt nerve activity in the areas of your spine sending pain signals to your brain.
